David ‘Fathead’ Newman (1933-2009)

Taken At: The Jazz Cellar

David Fathead Newman passed away on January 20th, 2009 due to pancreatic cancer. He was a five time visitor to Vancouver appearing frequently with local musicians, Tilden Webb, Jodi Proznick and Jesse Cahill.

Two years ago I was contacted by an editor at Wikipedia and asked if I would allow my photo be used in David’s wikipedia entry. I had since forgotten about this but it was a pleasant and slightly humbling experience to visit the page today and see my photo.

Although I saw him play numerous times, and photographed him twice in Vancouver, I didn’t know him that well and only shared a few words around the Jazz Cellar but he was always was a warm personality on and off stage. While sitting next to him at the bar, someone asked him about his portrayal in the movie Ray, which was less then flattering. There was air of collective awkwardness after the question was posed, but his response was honest and humble. He replied that the portray was accurate. I can only hope to look back on mistakes in my past with that much acceptance one day.

Nominated for National Jazz Award

Posted on:Thursday, January 31st, 2008

As some of you may know I was stoked to find out that I was a nominee for Jazz Photographer of the Year for the National Jazz Awards. Public voting is now and it would be great if you could take 3 minutes to vote for me on the website.

If you don’t know my work you can view my portfolio or my photo blog where I have been chronicling jazz performances in Vancouver over the last 8 months. The previous version resides on my Flickr Account and documents performances in Vancouver over the past 4 years. This year of the 5 albums nominated for Album of the Year, 3 feature my photography (Jodi Proznick Quartet, The Night Crawlers, and the PJ Perry / Cam Ryga Quintet) and one is my graphic design (Jodi Proznick Quartet).

You can vote here http://www.nationaljazzawards.com/phpQJr/poll.php?pid=5

There are quite a few categories and you have to make a selection in each one (although None of the Above is available for each one). Below is a list of musicians who I have collaborated with or have supported me throughout my career. They are all West Coast Musicians and are highly deserving of your vote. (listed in order)

Drummer: Dylan Van der Schyff
Bassist: Jodi Proznick
Trombonist: Hugh Fraser
Trumpeter: Brad Turner
Saxophonist: PJ Perry
Clarinetist: James Danderfer
Instrumentalist: Brad Turner or Ross Taggart
Male Vocalist: Denzal Sinclaire
Big Band: Jill Townsend Big Band
Acoustic Band: Jodi Proznick Quartet
Electric Band: Chris Tarry
Jazz Label: Cellar Live
Jazz Recording: Jodi Proznick Quartet or The Night Crawlers
Jazz Festival: Vancouver
Producer: Cory Weeds or Brad Turner
Photographer of the Year: Steve Mynett

These awards do a fantastic job of recognizing Canadian Talent and getting well deserving jazz musicians National and International recognition and it would be great not only for myself, but also the Vancouver Jazz Community if you could show your support by voting for us!

Cheers

-Steve

The furthest traveling member of the Jodi Proznick Quartet, Steve makes his home in England but travels to Vancouver to play with the quartet. This photo is very reminiscent to one I took of James Danderfer over 3 years ago before the Cellar was renovated.
